Nine regencies that produce tobacco in Central Java have expressed their willingness to help the government implement regulations to support tobacco producers, a regent says.
The nine regencies are Temanggung, Wonosobo, Magelang, Kendal, Demak, Grobogan, Blora, Boyolali and Klaten.
“Our request is not a political move," Temanggung Regent Hasyim Afandi said Saturday after attending a mass prayer event with around 1,000 tobacco farmers. "We only want to protect our tobacco farmers. I have met Wonosobo and Magelang regents, and they both agree with our proposal. Other regents are expected to join us soon.”
Hasyim said that many farmers had been relying on tobacco farming for their livelihoods. Therefore, the government must show concern for tobacco farmers’ livelihoods when issuing a regulation. |
